1. Applying to Residency:
Training as a Neurologist starts in your PGY2 year after completion of an internal medicine year. Students applying to our Advanced (A) track will be offered a guaranteed PGY1 internal medicine training year at either North Shore/LIJ or one of our partner hospitals in the area.
Application Deadline:
There is no strict application deadline. However, it is advised to send the completed application as soon as possible, as applicants are invited for interviews on a rolling basis. Our interview season starts from Mid-October and concludes in the beginning of January. Please notify us within 48 hours of receiving an interview offer to confirm your interview date.
Interviews are held remotely in accordance with ACGME guidelines, although in-person second looks will be held in January or February.
Candidates should submit applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) to our program (ID#). We will be participating in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
2. Preliminary year:
As we are an advanced program, applicants have the freedom to choose where to complete their PGY1 year. However, for those applicants that choose to spend their PGY1 year with us, we offer 3 guaranteed spots at the North Shore/LIJ preliminary year program and 6 guaranteed spots across two partnered Northwell hospitals in the area. Three spots are with the South Shore University Hospital transitional year program, and three are with the Mather Hospital transitional year program. Interested applicants should apply to each of the PGY1 programs separately, but will easily be able to rank a linked program with our neurology residency through the NRMP.
Applicants who are interested in North Shore – LIJ Preliminary Year can find more information here.
Applicants who are interested in the South Shore University Hospital Transitional Year Program can find more information here.
Applicants who are interested in the Mather Hospital Transitional Year Program can find more information here.
For neurology, the ACGME requires preliminary years to include eight months in internal medicine, with primary responsibility in patient care or six months in internal medicine with primary responsibility in patient care, couple with a period of at least two months comprising one or more months of emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, or pediatrics. Residents may spend up to four months in neurology during this year.
3. International Medical Graduates:
We have generally not matriculated International Medical Graduates in previous years; however, we look at the WHOLE application in its entirety. We encourage International applicants to apply. All foreign graduates must be certified by the Education Council of Foreign Medical Graduates to apply to our program. You can find out more about ECFMG certification here. Clinical experience in the United States is required and strongly encouraged within the past five years.
USMLE/Comlex score: We accept either USMLE or Comlex and do not have a strict score cut-off. Please be advised that individual medicine preliminary programs may have a minimum requirement; please refer to their website for details.
Visas: We provide J-1 visas if needed depending on the individual case and circumstances.
4. Diversity and Inclusion:
The Northwell Neurology North Shore/LIJ Residency Program is in a city and neighborhood that is incredibly culturally diverse. It is located in the melting pot of cultures with two major International airports (JFK and Laguardia). The Northwell Center for Equity of Care supports system-wide initiatives including the Diversity, Inclusion and Health Literacy System Committee, the Executive Diversity and Inclusion Council and the LGBTQIA+ Patient Care Education Task Force.
As a result, issues of healthcare disparities and diversity and inclusion have always been at the forefront of the mission for the Department of Neurology and at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Hospital. Please visit here for more information on Northwell Health’s initiatives and commitment to diversity and inclusion.
