IS THERE AN APPLICATION DEADLINE?
Applicants interested in our residency program should apply through the electronic residency application service (ERAS). There is no strict application deadline. However, applications are typically reviewed early and interviews are granted on a rolling basis. Our interview season typically begins in October and concludes in January.
DOES MY APPLICATION HAVE TO BE COMPLETE BEFORE I SUBMIT IT TO ERAS?
No. You can submit additional documents through ERAS when available.
Applications must be completed prior to the application deadline of January 15 to be eligible for interview offers. It is advised to complete applications as soon as possible.
HOW MANY LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION SHOULD I HAVE?
We require three letters of recommendation. At least one should be from a neurologist.
DO I HAVE TO SUBMIT A LETTER FROM A NEUROLOGIST?
At least one of your three required letters of recommendation should be from a U.S. trained neurologist.
WHEN SHOULD I EXPECT TO RECEIVE AN INTERVIEW OFFER?
Interview offers will be sent on a rolling basis as applications are received. Thus, we urge you to complete the application as soon as possible
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM MY INTERVIEW DAY?
Interviews for the 2022-2023 cycle will be held remotely. We will hold a virtual happy hour on the night before the interview. In general, interviews are held in half-day sessions and include a combination of faculty interviews and informational sessions. Details regarding the structure and schedule of the interview will be available once interviews are offered.
IS RESEARCH EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO APPLY TO YOUR PROGRAM?
Research experience is not required to apply for our program.
DO I HAVE TO APPLY SEPARATELY FOR A PRELIMINARY POSITION?
Our program is an advanced program. Therefore, you will have to apply separately for a PGY1 program, and you will eventually be able to link the PGY1 program to our advanced program through the NRMP during the match. You can complete your internship outside Northwell, but if you choose to complete it at Northwell, we offer guaranteed spots at either North Shore/LIJ or one of our partnered Northwell programs at South Shore University Hospital and Mather Hospital. CAN I INTERVIEW FOR NEUROLOGY AND PRELIMINARY MEDICINE DURING THE SAME VISIT?
We offer guaranteed PGY1 internship spots for our residents across three Northwell programs, North Shore/LIJ, Mather Hospital, and South Shore University Hospital. North Shore/LIJ and Mather Hospital do not require separate interviews, whereas South Shore University Hospital does. If you are interested in these programs, please apply early during the application season.
DO YOU HAVE A CUT-OFF FOR YEAR OF GRADUATION FROM MEDICAL SCHOOL?
NO
DO YOU ACCEPT INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES?
Generally, in the past we have not, however we look at the WHOLE application. International medical graduates are encouraged to apply. We require IMG applicants to have ECFMG certification to be considered for an interview. We only sponsor J1 visas, all other visas are ineligible for sponsorship. Beyond this, our requirements for international and domestic applicants are the same
DO YOU HAVE MINIMUM USMLE OR COMLEX SCORE REQUIREMENTS?
There is no minimum requirement. Applicants must have passed USMLE 1 and II and/or COMLEX 1 and II.
DO YOU OFFER RESIDENT HOUSING?
There are numerous resident housing sites at Long Island Jewish Hospital and North Shore University Hospital to offset the cost of living in NYC and Long Island. There will be additional information available on housing during the interviews. Our residents live in various areas such as NYC, Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island City, Astoria, close to campus, and on campus housing.
