Scholarly activity is not only beneficial for education and career development, but it is a way that each of us can ever so slightly push the field of neurology forward. Each neurology resident at North Shore – LIJ takes part in at least one scholarly activity project, to include original research, case reports, reviews, community outreach, and/or quality improvement projects.
North Shore and LIJ are partnered with the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, the research arm of Northwell health, which is located on the North Shore campus. Through the Feinstein, the department of neurology is heavily involved in research, with over 35 active clinical trials and five NIH funded projects. As such, residents at the program are able to work together with faculty members that are not only experienced clinicians but also adept researchers. Research opportunities are varied, ranging from basic to translational to clinical, and involving every neurological subspecialty. Many residents opt to perform research as part of their scholarly activity, and this leads to many publications and conference presentations each year. We have a strong presence at AAN every year, in addition to other national and international conferences.
Attendance at conferences is encouraged. Each resident receives a $1,500 stipend for general conference attendance, and another $2,000 to attend a conference at which they are a first author on a presentation or poster. Some residents may not choose to perform research, so they may choose quality improvement or community outreach projects. These projects are also invaluable to broaden resident experience and at the same time lead to improvements to the status quo.
